pure Esports - CEVO Champions! By: sk` at 6/3/2010 9:06:34 PM

After almost a two week break from our most recent Winner’s Bracket Final victory over Nexus Gaming the time had finally come for us to compete for the Grand Final of the CEVO Zowie March Madness Tournament. After coming off a huge win to place ourselves in the Grand Final we had loads of confidence and felt more than ready for whichever opponent battled through the loser’s bracket to face us. It seemed as if it were inevitable that Nexus Gaming would meet Loaded in the Loser Bracket Final for a rematch on mp_backlot. While patiently waiting to see who our opponent would be, we came to find out that Nexus Gaming had disbanded shortly after their most recent loss to your's truly. This cause Loaded to receive a forfeit win and free pass into the Grand Finals to face us.

A couple days prior to the match we were informed of the Grand Final format. For this tournament final the Winner’s Bracket Champion (pure Esports) would only have to win 1 map to be crowned champion, where Loaded would have to win 2 maps. We were obviously very pleased to hear this, and happy that CEVO had finally provided an advantage to the Winner’s Bracket Champions in the Grand Final. Each team was instructed to pick a map for the Grand Final. Loaded chose mp_crash since they felt very confident after dismantling their most recent opponent Carnal Gaming 13-0. After much discussion and thought we decided to pick a rarely played yet strong map for us, mp_crossfire.

The overall consensus throughout the community and in a seemed to be that Loaded was the favorite to win this match. This did nothing but fuel the fire for us to close the tournament out. Loaded’s map was set to be played first, on their server. We got started on mp_crash in a high profile match being casted by eFrag tv. Loaded dominated the knife round right away to win side choice for the match and naturally chose Defense. We rolled through the first four rounds on offense to go up 4-0 before Loaded took a round. This was looking to be a very strong first half for us. Loaded was able to bring the score back to 5-4 in our advantage. If we wanted a real shot at closing the match out we knew that we had to have a very strong offensive half. After multiple huge clutch rounds throughout the half by limitless, Nicolas, and Nrv the half came to a close with us leading 8-4.

The second half of the match began and before we knew it we were sitting in a 9-9 tie, then a 10-10 tie and only 4 rounds to play. We knew that if we wanted to close the match out on top we would have to make some defensive adjustments. After a few coordinated pushes to grab a couple rounds we were sitting with a 12-11 lead with one crucial round to play. The final round was the deciding factor between victory or overtime. The round quickly went our way after each loaded player dropped one at a time to seal the grand final win.

pure.CoD in upper bracket finals! By: sk` at 5/12/2010 2:49:46 AM

CEVO took a fairly long break after the group stage events and the CEVO Zowie March Madness tournament has resumed! Naturally, we swept out group stage and were placed as one of the top seeds in the playoff bracket.

Despite an early challenge from Power House Gaming, our first matches in the tournament have been largely uneventful; however, that would change once we faced the well-established and respected, Nexus Gaming. Nexus dropped the so-called tournament favorites, Loaded Gaming, from the tournament in the opening round in an impressive 13-7 display. This quickly changed everyone's expectations regarding the tournament and demonstrated how fiercely competitive North American CoD remains.

Initially, we fell into what seemed like an insurmountable 0-5 hole, a hole that could lead us to being yet another so-called favorite falling to Nexus; however, things would quickly change. A few quick adjustments and an amazing clutch by Maglio and we finished the half 6-6.

From this point it got increasingly intense as both sides traded rounds; but quickly, we found ourselves up 12-11. To avoid OT, we called for a quick defensive push; as risky play that can back fire, and Limitless secured two early frags that sealed the match in pure's favor.

This win puts us in the grand finals as we await the conclusion of the loser's bracket. You can follow the CEVO Bracket here.

GG and well fought Nexus!

pureEsports grows into its 6th year! By: sk` at 5/11/2010 10:17:09 PM

Another year has passed under our belts and we slowly move into our 6th. I would be nice to write that the 5th year has been as prosperous as the ones before it; however, eSports in North America as a whole has experienced a deep and lasting recession. For us, it was no different.

The 2009-2010 year has seen the continuation of Unreal Tournament in Europe under Phaniax's vigiliant guidiance while North America has seen a minor flurry of activity in Call of Duty 4 despite the utter failure of competitive Modern Warfare 2.

We've begun to push into new markets, fighting games, continued exploration of RTS, and we will be changing the manner and style of content delivered here to address what eSports has always been about - playing competitively while improving or simply, exceeding our own potential.

Part of this change will involve content generation. For those interested in a paying role in this capacity, please PM sk` on our forums.

pure.Tekken going to MLG Orlando! By: sk` at 3/24/2010 5:26:15 AM

As esports continues to grow and mature we continue to embrace the avenues in which it does! As such, it is with much honor, and sense of pride we are announce our support of Aris Bakhtanians in his bid to win the first MLG Pro season for Tekken 6.

For us, fighting games represent one of the points in which the concept of esports was birthed, so being able to finally support them after so long is extremely welcome!

While there are no shortage of strong players in the Tekken community, Aris was a very natural selection. His attitude towards preparation and winning ensure a level of success we've come to expect. Moreover, his attitude toward the community and the game itself is extremely postive.

We look forward to his continued success in Tekken and his development as a player. Aris' notable accomplishments in fighting games:

pure.CoD in CEVO March Madness By: sk` at 3/24/2010 4:19:40 AM

Despite Infinity Ward doing their best to kill competitive CoD with the removal of PC servers for Modern Warfare 2, Call of Duty 4 continues to live on. After a disappointing 2009 for North America; the American scene has seen a strong resurgence. In reaction to this, CEVO announced their Zowie March Madness tournament!

Due to scheduling issues, our last CEVO group; who finished 2nd, will not be able to compete in its entirety; however, we will still be able to field a very strong team. As we remain an extremely established and hot team, we look forward to the continued support our fans have shown! Keep on eye out for broadcasts of our matches and re-casts here on the site.
